From house museums to preservation: Historic Columbia Foundation's shift toward preservation advocacy : 2005 Nov. ; [typescript] / Steven Wells.

Essay re the history of building preservation in Columbia, S.C., and the importance of the Historic Columbia Foundation in saving these structures in the years since 1961. Topics discussed include several early projects of the Foundation, such as the Robert Mills House and the Hampton Preston Mansion, and the organizations evolving relationship with these historic sites in the years since 1988. The Foundation's efforts ensured the preservation of two buildings owned by USC (the Black House and Kirkland Apartments on Pendleton Street, now The Inn at USC), however efforts to secure adaptive reuse of the gothic-revival style Richland County Jail building near Finlay Park proved unsuccessful.
